A gun threat affecting the Altoona Area School District was posted on Instagram Wednesday night. It included a picture of a person making an obscene gesture, and it included a threat about someone bringing a gun to school. School officials deemed the threat “credible” and that led to an investigation being opened by Altoona Police. That investigation is said to be ongoing at this point, but the exact content of the threat has not yet been released. Police have only said that at this point, they are seeking an unnamed teen as a possible suspect. The Instagram account that contained the original post is no longer accessible. As a precaution, the district decided to keep students and faculty in grades 6-12 home Thursday for a virtual learning day. Secondary students will return to in-person learning today. Police will be present at both buildings and students will be required to go through a security check upon entering. Backpacks will not be permitted inside the secondary school buildings. Because the threat did not mention the elementary schools, elementary students attended school Thursday as scheduled.
