A new engineering report sheds new light on the current condition of the old McCrory’s building on 11th Avenue in Altoona. The city hired an engineer to take a look at the building. While the engineer’s report shows that the masonry and steel structural members of the building remain in fair to good shape, the wood structural elements are not in good shape.. mainly due to damage from the leaky roof. The engineer’s report shows that much of the wood floor joists and the flooring itself on the second and third floors and the wood rafters and plywood of the roof are super-saturated and damaged to the point that most of it should be completely removed. The report though, does say that if something is done now, the building is salvageable, but the clock is ticking. The report was ordered after a previous inspection turned up about 4 feet of water in the basement. That water has since been pumped out.
