A constitutional amendment has been proposed by a pair of Pennsylvania Republican lawmakers that would end the collection of school property taxes in the commonwealth. Sen. John DiSanto and Rep. Perry Stambaugh say Senate Bill 424 and House Bill 927… if passed… would allow voters to decide if the General Assembly should replace the levy with a combination of state and local sales and income taxes. It would prohibit school districts from levying property taxes. According to some estimates, Pennsylvania school districts will have collected about $15 Billion in tax revenue in the current year, and the figure will shoot up to just shy of $16 Billion in 2022. State residents living on fixed incomes increasingly struggle to afford their homes as those taxes climb. In fact, a WalletHub analysis now ranks Pennsylvania ninth in the nation for its tax burden on homeowners.
