Altoona’s deputy fire chief says he plans to retire and move to North Carolina to be closer to his family. After 22 years of service to the city, Altoona Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Tofano will step down tomorrow. Tofano has served in his position as deputy chief for the past nine years, and in making the announcement, he said it has been an honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to serve the citizens of Altoona. Tofano is retiring from the city, he says he plans to continue his career in public service. He has accepted a position with the Lexington Fire Department in North Carolina, where he will also serve as deputy chief. He says it will give him the opportunity to be closer to his childre, his parents, his siblings, and other family members who live in that area. Currently, there are no plans to immediately fill Tofano’s position. For now, his duties will be split between the other assistant chiefs and the fire inspectors division.
