An Altoona arsonist will spend the next 5 to 10 years in prison after he was sentenced yesterday in Blair County Court. 39 year old Jerret Aungst set fire to own home while using methamphetamine back in June 2019. That fire destroyed the house on West Chestnut Avenue. In April, Aungst was found guilty of arson, risking a catastrophe, burglary, recklessly endangering others, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He will be credited for about two years of time served in county prison since his arrest. But after his prison sentence, he will still be required to check with a parole officer until at least his 67th birthday. His defense attorney told the media that while he will of course, review the sentence, he most likely will not file any challenge because it does fall within the state’s standard sentencing guidelines. Aungst’s sentence also requires him to pay $500 to Chris and Bridget Hammel, as reimbursement for their insurance deductible. The couple was awakened during the early morning hours of June 9, 2019 by the fire a the Aungst property, and they and their baby got out of their house as the siding was melting. Altoona firefighters were able to save their home.
