Pennsylvania Representative and Altoona native Lou Schmitt will be serving on three state committees during the 2023-24 session. Schmitt will serve on the House Appropriations Committee, the House Transportation Committee and the State Government Committee.
A 40-year-old California man is facing charges after allegedly traveling across the country to sleep with a 14-year-old, according to the Office of the Attorney General. Blair County DUI Task Force officers will be taking to area roads during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. The task force will be making themselves known through check points, roving patrols and/or mobile awareness in an effort to make roadways safer.
Altoona police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon at a residence along the 2300 block of 4th Ave. Authorities say one person was transported to UPMC Altoona with a gunshot wound and is said to be in stable condition.

Crews in Clearfield County were called to an apartment building fire in DuBois this morning.The fire happened along South Highland Street in the early morning hours. Officials say all residents made it safely out of the building. Four residents were displaced and the Red Cross was on scene to assist.
An Altoona man is behind bars after allegedly breaking into a house and telling police it’s because two Puerto Rican men fired a shot at him. Patrick Oschea Jr., 45, is facing criminal trespassing and mischief charges after the incident on the 700 block of Logan Avenue around 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
The Altoona Planning Commission heard plans for a new Dollar General to be constructed at 5709 6th Avenue at their Tuesday meeting. There would be new sidewalks and curbing along 6th avenue.There is no timeline yet for when construction could begin.
Pennsylvania State Police arrested a 22-year-old man Tuesday night in Claysburg following an alleged homicide attempt. Late Tuesday, troopers were sent to the 100 block of Edgewood Street in Claysburg after a 34-year-old woman called 911 to report that her boyfriend, Robert David Short, of Punxsutawney, was firing shots inside the home.
